First week of the first month for this new year is the right moment for us to check and evaluate if we have set our goals correctly. Setting goals is very important for us, not only as a personal but also as a leader. Goal-setting will help us to achieve the things we want in life and in our professional career and to achieve our full potential as human being. Furthermore, having goals will help us to focus and know whatever direction we desire to go. However, we need to make sure that we will achieve our goals. Research conducted by the University of Scranton showed that 92 percent of people who set New Year’s goals never actually achieve them. Research showed that 20 percent of the population that does set goals, roughly 70 percent fail to achieve the goals they have set for themselves.
Douglas Vermeeren, the author of book “Amazing Success” explained 10 reasons why people fail to achieve their goals:
Goals have two categories to consider: “be” goals and “do” goals. For effective goal setting, it is not enough if we just decide what we want to do, we also have to work to accomplish whatever goal we have set.
Locke and Latham explained five principles to have successful goal-setting:
We have to make sure whatever goals we have set, not just goals written on paper, but we know how to accomplish it.
Luke 14:28-29 – Which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has the resources to complete it? Otherwise, if he lays the foundation and is unable to finish the work, everyone who sees it will ridicule him
